The Avon Mental Wellness Team was featured in an online article. The work of our team was highlighted throughout the Townepost.com article. I was part of the program's creation and launch in Avon Schools.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Avon Schools was the first district in the state of Indiana to shut down and begin school virtually. As a mental wellness team, we worked to identify several ways to continue supporting students, staff, and families during this extended closure. We created and recorded weekly mental wellness videos targeting students and adults. These videos were shared shared via the district's YouTube channel.
After seeing the mental health videos our team produced, the Indiana Department of Education asked our Mental Wellness Team to facilitate an online professional development for educators and professionals discussing grief as it pertained to the pandemic.
I have been asked to prepare and present professional development to school staff on a variety of topics including: behavior management, de-escalation, functional behavior assessments, behavior intervention plans, safety plans, and mental wellness. Below are some samples of presentations I have prepared and presented.
As part of my role with Avon Schools, I conducted short-term (6-8 week groups) focusing on mental wellness using a cognitive behavioral approach.
The attached lesson plans are to be used with the following resource: "What to Do When You Worry Too Much: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Anxiety" by Dawn Huebner, PhD.
As part of of my continued outreach to guardians and educators, I provided weekly updates containing information related to the week's lesson. I also included potential opportunities for guardians and educators to continue conversation outside of small group sessions.
The attached guardian/teacher updates are to be used with the following resource: "The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook for Kids: Help for Children to Cope with Stress, Anxiety, and Transitions" by Lawrence Shapiro PhD and Robin K. Sprague LCPC.
Upon receiving a newly referred student, I like to complete a few different inventories to learn more about the child. The inventories I like to use include:
Once information is gathered, I complete a student data summary page that is then shared with guardians and appropriate school staff. This summary creates the opportunity for more individualized strategies to support success at home and school.
